Analog vs. Digital Hearing Aids

While both analog and digital hearing aids are great options, they have some differences that may affect your decision.

Selecting the right hearing aid is a big decision and one that you should not make lightly. Since your hearing aid will be worn every day for the indefinite future, you want to choose a pair that works well for you. If you are making the decision between analog and digital hearing aids, here’s what you need to know.

Analog

Analog hearing aids make continuous sound waves louder, making sounds like speech and noise louder and easier to understand. Depending on which type you purchase, yours might be programmable so that it can adjust automatically to different listening environments. They can be used anywhere from quiet libraries to busy stadiums thanks to their versatility. They also typically cost less than digital hearing aids and can be more powerful and effective in some cases.

Digital

Digital hearing aids are also known as digital signal processors (DSPs) come with many of the same features that analog hearing aids do. However, they turn sound waves into digital signals that are precisely duplicated and replayed. Instead of making sounds louder, they seamlessly replicate sounds. The computer chips inside of them can also analyze speech and other sounds so that more complex relaying can occur.

Digital hearing aids are well-loved by many users because they have even more settings than analog hearing aids. They can also be customized to the specific hearing limitations of the end user, making them very versatile and flexible. However, you should be wary of off-brand digital hearing aids sold for low prices. These are often poorly made and do not work well in the long term. Instead, you should invest in a good-quality hearing aid that can get the job done.
